About the Brand
The eponymous brand was founded in 1927 in Florence, Italy, by designer Salvatore Ferragamo. The house began with making luxury shoes from quality leather. The houses reputation quickly flourished among the Hollywood stars of the time. The woman who shines behind the Salvatore Ferragamo collection is casual, feminine and sophisticated. With its thorough know-how and Italian touch, Salvatore Ferragamo designed one of the most popular models of the 1950s, the famous suede ballerina, for Audrey Hepburn. This model is still one of the emblems of the house today and it was reprinted for the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Audrey Hepburn in 2000.
In 1919 Salvatore Ferragamo, an Italian shoemaker sought his fortune in the United States. His first store opened in 1923 in California, on Las Palmas Boulevard. His creations are inspired by the cinematic work of Cecil B. DeMille. In 1924 he created a mule with striking details for the time that will delight the biggest of celebrities. Indeed, his loyal customers are Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner and Katharine Hepburn. His nickname became "shoemaker to the Stars." After this huge success, Salvatore Ferragamo returned to Italy in 1927 and opened its first production facility in his homeland. In 1938, the brand designed shoes Judy Garland for the film The Wizard of Oz, a pair of offset suede shoes. Then the house is transferred to Palazzo Spini Feroni in Florence with a majestic thirteenth century atmosphere. Salvatore Ferragamo was awarded the Neiman Marcus Award for the invisible sandal polyamide yarn. The designer also created models for Marilyn Monroe, pumps in ostrich, and Audrey Hepburn, wedge sandals obtained from casting his heels. Salvatore Ferragamo died in 1960 and his wife Wanda took the company's reins. Her three daughters Fiamma Di San Giuliano, Fulvia and Giovanna Gentile have been dedicated in the product development. That's when the first collection of ready-to-wear was launched, in 1965. In 1969, the leather goods line was created. Leather bags with Gancino clasps experienced rapid success. In 1989, the brand expanded into Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai in 1994 and Seoul in 2002. Since 2010 Massimiliano Giornetti is in charge of women ready-to-wear.
