Beyond a simple aesthetic bias, Comme des Garçons clothing aims to make us rethink our vision of beauty and of functionality in clothing. Why should a dress have holes for our arms? Why should we choose only one material to cut a garment? On the runway, dresses cover the models from chin to calves, between clothing and a work of art. Shapes and materials intertwine to give a new, ever more advanced, impulse to fashion.


In 1969, designer Rei Kawakubo began creating clothes under the Comme des Garçons label. Following her success, she officially founded the company in 1973. In 1975, the designer presented her first show in Tokyo. Six years later, in 1981, the Comme des Garçons brand established a branch in Paris and became the leading Japanese designer based in the French capital. Renowned for its aesthetic that questions beauty and functionality concepts, the Comme des Garçons clothing and accessories label focuses on the function of clothes. In 2004, Rei Kawakubo, supported by her husband Adrian Joffe, founded the Dover Street Market, a London concept store, which has since been imitated all over the world.


Rei Kawakubo, who was born October 11, 1942 in Tokyo, was not necessarily aiming for a career in fashion. After studying art and literature, she joined the marketing department of a textile company in 1964. She stayed there for three years and then started working as a freelance stylist in 1967. Two years later, she began to sell the clothes she created under the name Comme des Garçons, before founding the company in 1973. Rei Kawakubo received many awards. She was also honored with an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2017, becoming the second designer (after Yves Saint Laurent) to be celebrated with such a retrospective during their lifetime.
