For the more discerning, sequins, spangles and other crystals are the perfect way to create the most daring styles. The natural home of Paco Rabanne, a trailblazer of this trend, is in the world of neo-disco with bags featuring the oversized drop-beads and metal medallions that forged the reputation of the brand. Brought back on trend by Julien Dossena, the handbags created by the French brand are the perfect companions to bring a monochrome or somewhat conventional look to life. Rebel with a new cause, Alexander Wang, meanwhile, is letting go of the rock look that he's so successfully made his own to offer a number of pieces decorated with silver or coloured crystals. From bum bags to pouches and clutches, his bling accessories are nothing if not shiny. And Virgil Abloh is not to be outdone either. This season, the founder of Off-White and master of the humorous quip is offering a reworked version of his Jitney, a small city bag with an already iconic look that now comes covered with crystals. Ready to take it further? The American designer has thought of everything, with sandals as well as a pair of matching trainers.

Sparkle in every way possible

Lamé, mirror, rhinestones, crystals, drop beads... for this great disco comeback, anything - or almost anything - goes. But if the handbag or shoes still seem a step too far, remember you should never underestimate the power of a small accessory. From Versace's hair clips encrusted with small sparkling rhinestones, to Paco Rabanne's gold-tone chainmail earring and Gucci's ultra-bling sunglasses, when it comes to cool, it's all about the little things (usually rhinestones). And let's not forget, it is often these final touches - almost imperceptible but essential nonetheless - that, when carefully curated, might be all that's needed to add a good sprinkling of glitter to our everyday lives.

Once upon a time, sequins were just for the dancefloor. But for the Autumn/Winter 2019 season, designers have resolved to keep the party alive with a disco trend that is steadily gaining ground. And who would have thought that it could be so easy to add a bit of glitter to your wardrobe? Let's take a look.

Mix and match!

We can never say it too many times, mix and match is the sure-fire way to master any trend with aplomb. And although it's now quite acceptable to go for a daytime stroll dressed head to toe in sequins without raising any eyebrows, it’s always worth combining sequins with more understated and/or more refined fabrics. At Celine, Hedi Slimane mixes them with tweed for a less than conventional neo-bourgeois look, while Marco de Vincenzo allows just a glimpse beneath a sensible-as-can-be trench coat, like a shimmering secret just for those in the know. With tops, jackets, skirts and even jumpsuits, this autumn, designers are bringing disco well and truly back to life, with no inhibitions. Where glitter and lamé are routinely replacing silk tops and wool skirts.

Invest well in accessories

More versatile and easier to style, bags and shoes remain the simplest way to get to grips with the disco trend. Those who are more reserved may find it easier to start with a pair of boots or a handbag with flashes of metal to add a touch of sparkle to any look. And as luck would have it, this season, the extremely clever Ganni and the all-American girl Tory Burch are adorning their handbags with silver leather, while Jonathan Anderson is showcasing mirror leather in a reinvention of his Logo bag.
