Gucci Gucci

Hybridity is the main theme of Gucci's Fall/Winter 2018 Collection. As cultural appropriation is currently debated, Alessandro Michele makes a stand with a collection featuring various influences: flower prints rub shoulders with Prince of Wales check, (fake) fur, sequins and lace. Accessories are also a joyful mix, including turbans, masks, hoods and head jewelry. Rich and organized extravagance.

The Gucci story began in England. While working at the Savoy Hotel in London, Guccio Gucci rubbed shoulders with the English nobility and became familiar with the London style. This is how he came up with the idea of combining this refined aesthetic with Tuscan master craftsmen’s traditional know-how. In 1921, back in Italy, Guccio opened a leather goods company and a small light luggage shop in his hometown Florence. In 1930, the brand expanded its offer by manufacturing shoes and leather gloves. However, the fascist dictatorship, then the war, caused a shortage of raw materials. The fashion designer then imagined the "Bamboo bag", made of boar skin with a bamboo handle that would become one of the brand’s iconic designs, and some cotton canvas handbags. At the same time, he introduced Gucci's green / red / green signature web and the "Double G" logo, which would then be used on belts and small accessories. When Guccio Gucci died in 1953, his sons managed the brand. Then, in 2003, it became partly owned by the Kering Group. In early 2015, Alessandro Michele succeeded Frida Giannini as Creative Director, opening a new chapter in Gucci's history.

Alessandro Michele was born in Rome and studied at the prestigious Accademia di Costume e di Moda. He began his career as an accessory designer at Fendi before joining Gucci and the Tom Ford team in 2002 in London. For twelve years, he evolved within the company until being appointed Associated Creative Director working with Frida Giannini in 2011. During the presentation of the Fall/Winter 2015-2016 collections, Gucci announced the appointment of Alessandro Michele as Creative Director. The designer then unveiled a first men's collection before presenting his women's line a few weeks later. Praised within the industry for the renewal he brought the Italian luxury brand’s lines, the fashion designer has been rewarded many times since his appointment. He won the British Fashion Award for Best International Designer in 2015, Best International Accessory Designer in 2016, and the International CFDA Award in 2016.
