In August 2013 in New York, Sarah Law launched KARA, whose name is derived from the word KARAOKE, literally meaning "empty orchestra" in Japanese. Law is a California native who grew up in Hong Kong. She studied fashion at the Parsons School of Design before cutting her teeth at Gap, and now makes a line of bags that are full of character, understated and easy to wear. The brand's first backpack, in soft black leather with a wide horizontal zip and structured shoulder straps, was quick to create a buzz in the street as well as online, and the small Manhattan-based team that works alongside Sarah Law soon had a hit on their hands. KARA had its first iconic piece, and the success story began.
Born to an exceptionally creative American mother and a Chinese entrepreneur father, Sarah Law has always lived and worked in a melting pot of (sometimes contradictory) cultures, ideas, beliefs and interests. The contrast can be intense, and the young woman tends to feel like a foreigner wherever she goes. She quickly understood the importance of defining her identity and embracing her own dualities. "Be yourself, everybody else is taken" has become her mantra, beautifully illustrated on the brand's website.
KARA perfectly embodies a generation polarised by demands for fluidity - in the exercise of our freedoms, our movements, our choices. Sarah Law, who irrigates each of her collections with this exciting duality, loves nothing more than seeing the same bag carried by two people with completely different styles, and finding it perfectly suited to both. Each in their own way.
