Mother of Pearl

In 2002 the Mother of Pearl brand was founded by Maia Norman. The idea was original, cutting edge but affordable pieces, designed by a woman for other women. Each season, the brand associates with an artist to design the collection’s colourful, attractive prints. In 2008, the brand relaunched, with a younger, sportier vibe. Seven years later, it launched its first ever handbag collection and in 2017, it won the BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund Award.

Amy Powney was born in Lancashire and grew up far from the fashion world. At the age of ten, her parents moved to the country to renovate a barn, where the family lived without running water or electricity for a number of years, an experience that, according to Amy Powney, contributed greatly to creating her aesthetic. After secondary school, she moved to London. She studied at the University of Kingston and at the same time the future fashion designer began an internship at Giles Deacon. She then shared her time between two other fashion houses, Marios Schwab and Mother of Pearl.

It was at the latter that she was to make her career, encouraged by Maia Norman who trusted her and offered her the job of creative director in 2015.
