Kenzo's first designs started because he could only afford to buy his fabrics from flea sales. As a result, Kenzo had to mix many bold fabrics together to make one garment. Kenzo's success started in 1970: during this year he presented his first show at the Vivienne Gallery; his first store, "Jungle Jap" was opened; and one of his models appeared in the cover of ELLE. His collection was presented in New York and Tokyo in 1971. The next year, he won a prize from the Fashion Editor Club of Japan. Kenzo proved his sense of dramatic appearance when, in 1978 and 1979, he held his shows in a circus tent, finishing with horsewomen performers wearing transparent uniforms and he himself riding an elephant. After the leaving of Antonio Marras, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim were named creative directors of the KENZO fashion house, in July 2011. The duo came to fame in 2002 through the explosive success of Opening Ceremony, a new boutique in New York. Humberto Leon and Carol Lim met during their years of study at the University of California at Berkeley and have created a great complicity, transcribed in their work. Creative and energetic tandem, they also not hesitate to modify the codes of fashion by innovating and offering a new vision of fashion to their public. When they join Kenzo, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon brought a new life to the brand and brilliantly reinterpret the fashion codes: bright colors, original patterns and cultural diversity."A journey often starts from within." This Spring-Summer 2016, Kenzo follows a traveler in the long term, collecting a thousand objects in his path: accessories are therefore mixes of materials, shapes and colors. Here, Carol and Humberto deconstruct the concept of travel, the urban, remote or domestic wanderings. They work ethnic details in pop colors without westernizing them. True contemporary hybridization, this collection is loyal to the spirit of Kenzo: the home of social and cultural crossbreeding. The Kalifornia, Kombo and Bike bags are available in a wide palette of colours, pastels and brights, and play on different leathers, whether perforated, in a gommato effect or metallized.
