For his Fall/Winter collection 2017-18, Phillip Lim has chosen to turn to romanticism. Presented on Valentine's Day eve, his show featured slouchy silhouettes wearing ruffle skirts and rounded shoulders. With red carpet and bright pink walls, the scenography was inspired by the works of artist James Turrell whose creations were also reflected in certain pieces of the collection. As for accessories, bags have become very small and almost exclusively hand held, as to avoid unbalancing the silhouette.
In 2005, at the age of 31, Phillip Lim founded his eponymous brand named 3.1 Phillip Lim in reference to his age. The label was instantly acclaimed both by critics and customers for its designs mixing tailoring, sportswear and workwear dress codes. The result is a both elegant and effortless but devilishly effective silhouette. Accessories also play a part in this success. The Thai fashion designer, who is renowned for his jewelry, has also invented several iconic handbags. The Pashli Satchel edited in a variety of materials and formats since its launch, the Soleil Bucket Bag and the range of Alix Flap Shoulder bags, have all become must-haves. Since 2007 Phillip Lim has extended his talent to menswear.
Phillip Lim was born in Thailand in 1973 to Chinese immigrants. The family fled to Southern California when the civil war broke out in Cambodia. The young man discovered textile with his mother who was a seamstress. One day, as he was working as a salesman at Barneys, he opened a box of clothing branded Katayone Adeli and immediately contacted her to apply for an internship. When Adeli moved to New York, Phillip Lim stayed in the Los Angeles area and launched his first women's clothing line, Development, funded by a surf brand. At the time he met Wen Zhou, who became his friend and CEO of his eponymous label. Four years later, the fashion designer ended the collaboration with his investors. He took Wen Zhou’s advice and moved to New York, then founded the brand 3.1 Phillip Lim in the fall of 2005. The following year, he was awarded the highly prized CFDA Award in Womenswear. A reward he received for the second time in 2012 in the Menswear category.
