Oscar de la Renta

The Oscar de la Renta 2018 Spring-Summer jewellery collection is all about pompoms and delicate blooms. This season, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia are going back to the roots of design according to the brand’s founder with Spring-inspired earrings. Beads and colourful synthetic materials blend to produce flowery, original pieces.

Oscar de la Renta launched his eponymous label in 1965. The Dominican designer had only just left Elizabeth Arden where he had worked for two years and had some top of the range experience from working at Balenciaga and Lanvin.

In 1977, the fashion house launched Oscar, its first perfume, but didn’t move into accessories until 2001. Five years later, in 2006, Oscar de la Renta presented its first wedding collection. This was followed by a children’s clothing line in 2012.

In 2014, the fashion house changed artistic director for the first time since its inception. Peter Copping was hired a few months before the death of Oscar de la Renta. In 2016, Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia took over the reins.

Few designers can claim to have taken over the fashion house in which they started their careers. This was the case for Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia as the design duo’s first job out of college was at Oscar de la Renta. He had studied architecture in Notre-Dame and she had a B.F.A. from Pratt. They were both hired to work at Oscar de la Renta in the early 2000s, climbing the ladder to end up as Senior Designer and Design Director in less than a decade.

In 2015, the duo left Oscar de la Renta to found their own label, Monse. A year later, after working for Carolina Herrera, the pair came home to Oscar de la Renta where they replaced Peter Copping.
