In 1927, Salvatore Ferragamo, previously established in the United States where he created shoes for the movie industry, returned to Florence where he opened a clothing workshop. Thanks to the anatomy courses he attended in Southern California, he was able to produce comfortable shoes, designed to adapt to women’s feet and movements. This small technical feat along with innovative designs quickly made him famous among wealthy clients. Feminine, sophisticated and with a touch of fantasy, many of Salvatore Ferragamo shoe designs, such as the F Heel, featuring an undercut wedge heel or the Rainbow sandals, with a large multi-colored sole, have become references. After his death in 1960, his children took over. His eldest daughter Fiamma, imagined the now iconic Vara flats. The brand then launched its first ready-to-wear collection in 1965 and its first line of leather goods in 1969.
In October 2016, the shoemaker Paul Andrew was appointed Creative Director for the brand’s women’s shoes. Since September 2017, he has been in charge of all the women's collections of the Italian label. Born in England, the New York-based designer worked with the most renowned (Alexander McQueen, Donna Karan, Narciso Rodriguez) before founding his eponymous label in 2012. Like Salvatore Ferragamo himself, Paul Andrew was interested in creating comfortable shoes. His brand quickly became popular and was rewarded on numerous occasions. In 2014, he was the first shoemaker to win the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund. Two years later, he won the CFDA Swarovski Award for Accessory Design. In October 2016, he became the first creative director in charge of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. A year later, he was promoted Creative Director of the women's collections, where he succeeded Fulvio Rigoni and will be designing his very first ready-to-wear line for the fall 2018 collection.
